Robert J. Doherty

Associate Instructor, USA

Portland, Maine Police Department.  Lt. Doherty became a Verbal Judo instructor in 2005 following a train-the-trainer course instructed by Dr. Thompson. With over 28 years of experience as police officer, detective and instructor for the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. Lt. Doherty has brought the principles and philosophy of V.J.  to over 3000 City of Portland employees.

Training sworn police officers, civilian staff and members of the private sector is something at which Lt. Doherty is particularly skilled.  Drawing from first-hand experience after defusing and de-escalating thousands of encounters, Lt. Doherty is able to draw an audience in, relating real-life experience to his instruction style. This technique has been particularly useful when teaching students how to respond when on camera, (Dashboard, body camera and I-phones). Lt. Doherty is exceptional at imparting V.J. skills to the younger generation.  Ensuring that younger employees, as well as those with more tenure, recognize that they are speaking as empathetic professionals at all times is a trademark of Lt. Doherty’s presentations.
