Darrel Carnegie

Associate Instructor, New Zealand

Darrel has over 22 years experience with the New Zealand Police.  He has worked in various roles from a Community Constable to a member of the Elite Special Tactics Group (STG). He has extensive experience in defensive tactics, firearms, staff safety training and conflict management. After leaving the NZ Police in 2017 Darrel moved to Victoria, Australia, where he continued to work in the defensive tactics and de-escalation space. He provided training for organisations such as Victoria Fisheries and Parks Victoria.

A highlight of his time in Australia was assisting the Victoria Sheriffs’ Office develop a training program for the Sheriffs to use OC Spray. Whilst in Australia Darrel met the Director of Verbal Judo Australia, Trevor Lawson. Under Trevor Lawson’s’ guidance and instruction Darrel qualified as a Verbal Judo instructor. In 2018, Darrel returned to New Zealand and started Verbal Judo New Zealand. Darrel is extremely enthusiastic about keeping our communities safer by passing on his real-world knowledge and experience through the Verbal Judo program.
